This is one of the coolest cars I’ve ever documented and so unique that most people don’t even know about them. It’s a 1962 Oldsmobile Jetfire, one of 3,765 produced, and, along with the Chevrolet Corvair Monza, is the first turbocharged production passenger car ever made in the United States.
The car was still sitting on its original bias-ply tires. A peek in the trunk revealed two gallons of Olds’ “Turbo-Rocket” water-methanol injection mix still stashed away. I opened the door to a nearly perfect silver and black bucket-seat interior. The car had only rolled a little more than 44,000 miles—this thing was like new.
Looks to be all original and in pretty good shape. It’s amazing how many barn finds are still out there. I love odd ‘60s-’70s domestic stuff. You see so many “normal” cars from the time period that it’s easy to forget rare options and configurations.

One made it 44k miles? Under meticulous care, I’m sure, but that block’s a keeper.

Great find. Now I hope they don’t one of the two options that seem to be the rage these days: restore the crap out of it or treat the dirt like it’s some kind of holy grail. Clean it up, get it running, and get it out on the road.

I know, right? That’s amazing for an early 60’s aluminum GM block.

They’d better also examine the radiator and Turbo Rocket Fluid tank cap for signs of dark sorcery.

Yeah, they need to be extra careful. Based on what I know about 60’s turbo technology, the boost from October of 1962 should be coming in any day now.
Joking aside, I am not sure where they are going to go with this. It’s rare but I don’t think it’s especially valuable.

Very very cool. But I wouldn’t touch that thing with a 10 foot pole.

Did I read that right? 10.25:1 compression and turbocharged? No wonder they needed Turbo Rocket Fluid. I don’t know much about these, but that sure looks interesting.
